After four years in Sam Houston State, Herman was hired by Texas State as the offensive coordinator in 2005. In his two years with Texas State his squad led the Southland Conference in total offense and was ranked eighth in scoring. The Bobcats made an impressive run to the NCAA during the team’s first ever appearance in Division IAA as Barrick Nealy placed fifth in the polls to win the Walter Payton Award (top offensive player in Division I-AA).

On December 9, 2011, Urban Meyer selected Herman as his offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Buckeyes.
